The school has developed strong links with local charities and specifically to the Thien Phuoc centre for disabled children. The centre is supported through fund-raising and by visits from our students.

Low-cost Linux-compatible laptop ships in Vietnam

A low-cost laptop for children based on Intel's Classmate PC design is now shipping in computer stores in Vietnam. Hacao's Classmate PC is pre-installed with Hacao Linux 2.16 Professional, a Vietnamese-language distribution based on Puppy Linux.




As reported in DesktopLinux in October, the Hacao Classmate PC is closely based on the Intel Classmate PC, a rival educational laptop to the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) project for seeding low-cost Linux-based laptops to students in developing nations. Meanwhile, Intel has also joined the OLPC initiative.

The Hacao Classmate PC is equipped with an ultra-low power 900MHz Celeron processor with a 400MHz FSB (front-side bus), teamed with 256MB of RAM and 1GB of Flash-based local storage. The 2.9-pound device measures 9.6 x 7.7 x 1.7 inches (245 x 196 x 44mm), and features a 7-inch WVGA (800 x 480) LCD display.

It also includes both wired and wireless (802.11b/g) Ethernet interfaces, but lacks the OLPC laptop's "mesh" networking capability. (The latters allows multiple wireless laptops to access the Internet though a single wired device.)

The Hacao Linux 2.16 Professional distribution was released in June by Hacao, says Nguyen Quang Truong, director of the company. Currently available only in a Vietnamese-language version, the 281MB distro is about three times the size of its Puppy Linux cousin.

According to Truong, the Vietnamese government chose Hacao Linux for its educational system over the Classmate's alternative Windows XP operating system because the Classmate's relatively low performance kept it from effectively using Windows. Moreover, he says, Windows would add $38 (US) per unit to the overall cost while Hacao Linux costs only a $2 labor fee for installation.

Availability

The Hacao Classmate PC is available now in Vietnamese computer stores for $340 (US). A version aimed at the school market is discounted to $250. More information is available here.

Rơi từ tầng 12, nữ Việt kiều tử nạn

Một nữ Việt kiều đã tử nạn sau khi rơi từ tầng 12 Chung cư Khánh Hội 2, TP HCM xuống đất. Vụ việc xảy ra lúc 14h ngày 24/2.
Hiện trường vụ rơi từ tầng 12 làm nữ Việt kiều chết tại chỗ.



Bất chợt phát hiện bóng một người rơi ngang ô cửa sổ, những người dân sống dưới tầng 12 Chung cư Khánh Hội 2 hốt hoảng khi thấy thi thể một phụ nữ nằm bất động trên vũng máu.

Nạn nhân được xác định là một nữ Việt kiều Pháp (56 tuổi). Sau khi rơi từ tầng 12 Khahomex building (lô C cao 17 tầng, thuộc Công ty CP Xuất nhập khẩu Khánh Hội, số 360A Bến Vân Đồn, phường 1, quận 4), người phụ nữ đã tử vong tại chỗ.

Nạn nhân định cư tại Pháp sau 7 năm mới trở lại thăm quê trong dịp Tết Nguyên đán. Những người hàng xóm kể lại, trước khi xảy ra tai nạn, trong nhà nạn nhân có một người giúp việc, người này vừa ra khỏi nhà thì xảy ra sự cố.

Tại phòng của nạn nhân ở tầng 12, cơ quan công an phát hiện một vũng máu và một con dao. Hiện nguyên nhân vụ việc đang được cơ quan điều tra tiếp tục làm rõ.

Gã ăn mày điển trai gây"ồn ào" cư dân mạng Trung Quốc

Mới đây, một chàng ăn xin ở Trung Quốc đã trở nên nổi tiếng bất ngờ sau khi các bức hình của anh chàng được đăng tải trên mạng Internet.



Các cư dân mạng (netizen) ở Trung Quốc đặt cho anh chàng biệt danh là “Gã ăn xin đẹp trai tuyệt vời”, “Gã ăn xin đẹp trai số 1”. Họ còn nói rằng trông anh chàng này giống như những tài tử điện ảnh của Nhật Bản, Hàn Quốc hoặc Hong Kong.Với vẻ ngoài khác lạ độc đáo và phong trần cộng với những bộ cách hợpmốt trông rất bụi, anh chàng đã trở thành tâm điểm chú ý của nhiều cư dân mạng Trung Quốc. Thậm chí, các netizen còn đổ xô tìm kiếm thông tinvề anh chàng này.


Một cô gái viết lời nhận xét trên một diễn đàn trực tuyến về anhchàng ăn mày điển trai này: “Đôi mắt buồn của anh ấy mới biểu cảm làm sao, bộ râu trông cũng buồn nữa, mái tóc tuyệt vời dù rối bời, tất cả những điều ấy thực sự cuốn hút tôi”.

(VTC News) - Bức hình một chàng trai đang nhăn trán “đăm chiêu” với điếu thuốc lá, phong cách “phối” trang phục “khác thường” và mái tóc như được “đánh rối” để làm tăng thêm vẻ… lãng tử khiến nhiều người nghĩ đây là bức hình chụp cho một bộ sưu tập thời trang nào đó. Nhưng sự thật thì đây là hình một người ăn xin đang đi trên đường.

Bức hình đang “làm mưa làm gió” trên một diễn đàn online ở Trung Quốc và người đàn ông trông cực kỳ “ngầu” này được cư dân mạng phong cho danh hiệu “Chàng ăn xin xì-tai (có phong cách) nhất”.

Phong cách thời trang được đem so với ngôi sao của "Giày thủy tinh" - So Ji Sub. và cả những nhãn hiệu thời trang danh tiếng trên thế giới. "Vua ăn mày" rất thích hút thuốc lá, khi người qua đường cho tiền, anh lập tức mua thuốc lá và hút. Thức ăn thì anh tự tìm kiếm ở những thùng rác đủ để qua ngày. Người ta thường gom những người ăn xin vào một khu vực dành riêng, nhưng anh chàng này không thuộc đối tượng bị gom lại. Bởi là ăn mày, nhưng anh chưa từng nói lời xin, cũng không biết xin ăn, xin tiền. Anh chỉ lang thang và tự tìm thức ăn để sống. Đơn giản, anh là người không có thân phận, không có gia đình, thậm chí quên cả tên mình.
